Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a functional disorder with typical symptoms of abdominal pain or discomfort often reported as cramping, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and/or constipation. IBS affects the colon or large bowel, which is part of the digestive tract.

There is clear evidence that emotional stress and anxiety contribute to IBS and can even trigger attaks. This is because the brain and intestine are tightly connected by nerves that control intestinal muscles.

The use of hypnosis to help manage IBS has been well documented. Read a study by the University of South Manchester (UK) and reported in the American Journal of Gastroenterology here

You can find an overview of many studies on the use of Hypnotherapy in treating IBS here

Hypnotherapy is particularly helpful with children suffering from IBS because they respond well to a therapeutic technique called Guided Imagery. You can read about an excellent study of the effectiveness of Hypnotherapy with children suffering from IBS here

My own family experience enables me to easily build a positive relationship with children that leads to excellent outcomes.

I will mention that, like all Clinical Members of the Australian Hypnotherapists Association, I have a valid Blue Card issued here in Qld by the Commission for Children and Young People.
