Hypnotherapy to Quit Smoking

An study reported in Science Daily demonstrated significant results with using hypnotherapy to assist with quitting smoking.

Hospitalized patients who smoke may be more likely to quit smoking through the use of hypnotherapy than patients using other smoking cessation methods. A new study  shows that smoking patients who participated in one hypnotherapy session were more likely to be nonsmokers at 6 months compared with patients using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) alone or patients who quit “cold turkey.

Our results showed that hypnotherapy resulted in higher quit rates compared with NRT alone,” said Faysal Hasan, MD, FCCP, North Shore Medical Center, Salem, MA. “Hypnotherapy appears to be quite effective and a good modality to incorporate into a smoking cessation program after hospital discharge.”

Over the years, there have been many carefully designed studies that consistently show hypnotherapy as being one of the more effective tools for smoking cessation. This benefit appears to be because hypnotherapy directly addresses the subconscious and its reasons for keeping a smoker smoking.

Most smoking cessation strategies only address the physical withdrawal symptoms of nicotine addiction and while overcoming these symptoms can be extremely challenging, they pass within a few day or weeks. Yet many ex smokers return to their addiction after months or years, long after the physical aspects of the addiction have passed.

This happens because the emotional and subconscious reasons for being driven to smoke have not been addressed and resolved.
